Larger sized Fly Fishing Net: Quilted Maple and Koa

$525.00

This an elegant and functional traditionally sized landing net made with striking woods. 23 inches overall, 9 inch handle and a 14 x 10.5 inch hoop.

This net handle was made from the small cutoffs of koa from a guitar maker in my area. For a number of years he would sell the saw cutoff to a local Woodcraft.  I was always on the look out for the special pieces. I tried to use each piece down to the sawdust, it was that special.  This handle was created from that wood and some special maple I found a number of years ago. (25 years). The cut offs of a special piece of maple from a small saw mill in Iowa are also used.

When I first started making nets I went to that mill with my father.  Walking across the mill yard, there was a block of wood covered by mud and grim, the grain of the wood just barely showed through.  When I bought my lumber I asked about that small board and they replied,  "Just take it."  I cut it into small planks and let it dry.  When I finally used that wood, I found that it had some of the highest figure and the most iridescent grain that I have ever seem.  I think the rest of that log ended up in pallets.

The hoop is Koa from a small supplier in Hawaii that would tell me where each of the trees he harvested had grown and when it had fallen.  It is combined with some northern Michigan maple. This net features a soft nylon catch and release bag.  It is finished with multiple coats of epoxy. All my nets are signed and numbered.  The brass eye is custom made in my shop.

If you are interested in a similar net with custom woods or features it is available as a special order, there is a 6-12 month wait time.  Please contact me to discuss  a custom order to confirm details. (sam@flyfishingnets.net)
